The National Assembly has released the official burial arrangements for the late Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, following a press briefing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The announcement was made by a joint burial committee comprising members of the Senate, House of Representatives, family representatives, and close associates. Chairman of the committee, Senator Osita Izunaso, described Anaekwe’s passing at the age of 69 as a painful loss not only to his family and community but also to the entire nation, noting that Chief Anaekwe departed at a time when his wisdom and political guidance were needed most.

• Night of Tributes at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja

• Valedictory Session at the National Assembly, Abuja
• Valedictory Session at Anambra State House of Assembly, Awka
• Valedictory Session by Igwe-in-Council and Adazi-Ani Town Union at the Igwe’s Palace
• Vigil Mass and Wake Keep at his country home in Adazi-Ani

• Lying-in-State at his country home
• Funeral Mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Adazi-Ani
• Interment immediately after at his residence
Saturday, October 18, 2025
• Condolence visits from family, in-laws, and sympathizers

• Outing and Thanksgiving Mass at All Saints Catholic Church, Adazi-Ani in Anambra State.
Among the dignitaries at the press briefing were Senator Chris Ngige, former Governor of Anambra State; Dr. Ijeomah Anadiogbu, Vice Chairman of APC South East; Senior Advocate of Nigeria BC Igwilo, who chairs the Local Organising Committee; Hon. Bartholomew Anaekwe, brother of the deceased; as well as his children and close associates.
Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives during Nigeria’s 3rd National Assembly between 1992 and 1993, was widely respected for his humility, leadership, and commitment to democratic ideals. His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history.
