The League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has expressed deep shock and immense grief over the tragic death of Miss Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a journalist with Arise News, who was reportedly killed by suspected armed robbers in her residence on September 29, 2025.
According to a press release signed by Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, Interim President, and Princess-Ekwi Ajide, Interim Secretary of LAJA, the association described Maduagwu as “a shining light in the newsroom and a passionate voice for truth, justice, and accountability.”
The statement noted that her passing was not only a personal loss to her family, friends, and colleagues, but also a huge blow to the Nigerian media fraternity and the nation at large.
LAJA strongly condemned the “heinous act” and urged the Nigerian government and security agencies to leave no stone unturned in fishing out the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
“This tragedy once again highlights the precarious conditions under which journalists in Nigeria live and work. Their safety and protection should be a matter of urgent national priority,” the statement read.
The body extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues at Arise News, and all who had the privilege of working with her, describing her death as “a cruel extinguishing of a vibrant young professional’s light.”
“Somtochukwu’s dedication and courage will continue to inspire us. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” LAJA added.
