In a heartwarming and empowering move, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday handed over the reins of his office to 14-year-old Joy Ogah, a teenage advocate for girl-child education, for just one day. The gesture highlights the administration’s commitment to promoting education and empowerment, particularly for girls.
During her brief tenure, Ogah addressed the nation, urging inclusive education, protection of girls’ rights, and the provision of basic amenities like sanitation and nutrition in schools. “When girls are protected, peace becomes possible,” she said, adding, “I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”
Vice President Shettima reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to girl-child education, pointing to initiatives such as the national school feeding program. He also praised First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu as a symbol of female empowerment, recalling her active contributions in the Nigerian Senate, especially on issues affecting girl-child education.
The one-day handover was part of a meeting with a PLAN International delegation led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, aimed at advancing girl-child education in Nigeria. The organization has reached over 11 million children through programs in education and entrepreneurship.
Ogah’s tenure, though brief, sends a powerful message about the importance of sustained support and investment in girls’ education, inspiring leaders and citizens alike to champion the cause.
