Candidates of various political parties contesting the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State have signed a peace accord to ensure a peaceful and credible process. The ceremony, held on Monday at the International Conference Centre, Awka, was organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC) and witnessed by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM.
According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the event brought together political leaders, security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society groups, and traditional rulers, all reaffirming their commitment to a violence-free election.
Speaking at the event, the IGP stressed the importance of political tolerance and respect for democratic values, urging candidates and their supporters to genuinely commit to peace before, during, and after the election. He assured that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies were fully prepared to provide adequate security and would remain neutral and professional throughout the process.
Egbetokun also commended the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, for his proactive security engagements and consistent advocacy for peaceful participation across the state.
The candidates, in their separate remarks, pledged to uphold the principles of non-violence and called on their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and respect the electoral process.
The peace accord, coming just days before the crucial governorship election, is seen as a vital step toward fostering mutual trust and ensuring a stable political atmosphere in Anambra State.
